No 1159 - Medical Officers' Coach

No. 1159 was first built as a toplight brake third to Diagram D47 lot 1195 as No 3551 in December 1911.  It was purchased by the government in April 1916 and converted to form part of an ambulance train during WW1. It formed part of Continental Ambulance Train No.27 used in France during the Great War to transfer casualties to the channel ports.

After the war the vehicle was re-built in January 1925 as a passenger brake van to Diagram K36, Lot 1344 and renumbered as 1159.

Then in the 1945 a further conversion was made to the Medical Officers' Coach. This was used to take doctors out to GW staff so that medical examinations could be conducted around the network rather than bringing the staff to major centres for such purposes. This conversion was to Diagram M33.

The coach was condemned in June 1961 but remained in departmental service as ADW 150294.

There are no plans to restore 1159 at present.
