Living Museum of the Great Western Railway

No 3963 - Churchward Toplight Corridor Third

3963 is an all 3rd Toplight of 1919. The vehicle was converted into a camping coach in 1955 resulting in five compartments being removed and three others reconfigured as bedrooms, one end being an open saloon. This camping coach was at Dawlish Warren and was acquired for preservation in 1981, initially at the Gloucestershire-Warwickshire Railway, before moving to Llangollen in 1988 where it was used as an accommodation vehicle.

3963 was purchased from the Llangollen railway in 2012 and moved to Didcot.

One interesting feature is the body panelling, being in the transition period with lots of experimental design work. The panels are still wood but rather than being but jointed at the waistline they overlap in the same way as is standard on 'tin' panelled stock.

There are no current restoration plans.
