Living Museum of the Great Western Railway

No 5952 - Collett All Third

More than fifty of these Collett all 3rd compartment coaches were built under lot 1527 (Nos. 5928-5982). They represent a somewhat transitional design in that the corridor side is accessed by 4 doors, whereas the compartment side has a door to each compartment.

5952 was built in 1935. Having been preserved in 1966 it formed part of the Great Western Society's Vintage Train and has also run at Didcot Railway Centre. The largely mahogany interior repeats a design rooted in Victorian tradition, and is in very good condition, having been subjected to a renovation programme several years ago although it would benefit from re-upholstering. Externally, however, it is likely to require some re-cladding and re-glazing. There are no definite plans to restore this vehicle at present, but it may find its way into the works once No. 7371 has been completed.
