No 2913 - 'Fruit D' Passenger Fruit Van

‘Fruit’ is the GWR telegraphic code for fruit vans - an uncharacteristically obvious code. The ‘D’ in this instance indicating that the wagon was of the 28ft 6ins design, these being the last and largest fruit vans built by the GWR. They are very similar to the slightly earlier fruit vans built to diagram Y9, but had three pairs of doors on each side instead of two.

2913 is one of 50 such fruit vans built to diagram Y11 lot 1649 in 1939-41. As built they were fitted with gas lighting and with removable galvanised wire trays to carry the fruit boxes. Initially preserved at the West Somerset Railway, before transferring to the Swanage Railway, it came to Didcot in 2012.
