Join Us and Get Involved

The Railway Centre is run by the Great Western Society – Charity No. 272616.  We have around 4,000 members including over 250 active volunteers who help run the Centre.

Between them, they contribute more than 50,000 hours a year to restore, maintain, operate and conserve the steam locomotives, historic carriages, wagons and railway buildings in our unparalleled collection or help welcome the 50,000 visitors that come to explore and savour the golden age of the Great Western Railway.

Whether you just want to stay in touch with our work and support the Centre’s ongoing journey, or wish to get hands on at the Centre, then please join us.

Our members are key to ensuring that the story of the Great Western Railway continues to engage and inspire for generations to come.

As well as free entry on most open days, members receive the quarterly Great Western Echo magazine with news of the latest activities, developments and restoration projects at Didcot along with articles on the historical aspects of the GWR.

Join now and get onboard!

Please note that membership taken out up to three weeks prior to our Pendennis Launch weekend (2/3 April) is not valid for free admission over that weekend.

Voluntarily Gift Aiding Your Subscription allows us to reclaim tax to help look after our collection.

If you'd like to play a more active role, we're always looking for new volunteers to help run the Centre - find out more.

Didcot Railway Centre is operated by the Great Western Society whose volunteer members restore and operate the trains and other exhibits.

Members can help to keep alive part of the GWR, by volunteering; perhaps joining one of our restoration teams, or helping at running days and events by becoming a Station Master, Shunter, or Guard, or even ultimately a Driver. We also need volunteers to help with a variety of office tasks at Didcot, some of which is midweek work which may appeal to retired members. We also have a Young Volunteers group

However there is no obligation to take an active role; one of the benefits of membership is free admission to most events at Didcot Railway Centre and many members join for the opportunities this gives.

Members receive the quarterly Great Western Echo magazine with articles on Society activities and the GWR. Local Groups organise meetings and events in the Bristol, South West (Torbay) and Taunton areas.

Please note that membership taken out up to three weeks prior to our Pendennis Launch weekend (2/3 April) is not valid for free admission over that weekend.
