No 950592 - 'Toad' 20T Brake Van

‘Toad’ is the GWR telegraphic code for a brake van. Most goods trains were ‘unfitted’ (no continuous brakes) so relied on the engine’s brake and the Guard’s handbrake in the brake van.  Brake vans were ballasted with scrap metal or concrete to increase the weight and brake force.

950592 was built at Swindon in 1950 as a 20 ton brake van.

Some 326 brake vans were built by the GWR to diagram AA23 between 1942 and 1949 and later also by British Rail.
