Terms and Conditions for Railway Experience Days



GENERAL: Please note that, to take part in these REDs, participants must be over 18 years of age. Operating a steam locomotive can be physically demanding and while our staff are there to offer help and guidance, it is important that those taking part are able to move between the footplate and platform unassisted, a step of some two feet. It is also important that participants don't suffer short-term memory loss, have reasonable vision and hearing (glasses and hearing-aids are OK) and are otherwise reasonably fit. Participants must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol on the day.

CLOTHING: Safety on the footplate is paramount and appropriate protective clothing and footwear must be worn; a 'T' shirt, shorts and trainers or sandals are definitely not acceptable.  Overalls or boiler suits are preferable but in all cases it is recommended that clothing made from cotton should be worn next to the skin. Man-made fibres can melt onto the skin if inadvertent contact is made with any of the hot boiler fittings. Stout shoes and boots are needed with safety boots being preferable.  A pair of gloves (Canadian rigger style) are recommended when firing and handling the controls. A locomotive footplate can be cold, too, so make sure you dress for the weather.

Booking and Terms & Conditions

Your joining instructions should be sent to you in the post shortly after your booking.

We reserve the right, for operational reasons, to vary the dates of these REDs and, should this become necessary, we will contact you by phone or e-mail, giving at least two weeks' notice if possible. If we have no suitable alternative dates we will refund your payment in full.


Should you wish to cancel your booking you should email no later than six weeks before the date of the Experience and a refund will be made, less a £25 administration charge. Should you need to cancel within that six week period, we will only make a refund subject to our being able to find someone else to take your place.

Whereas every effort will be made to ensure that the advertised locomotive will be available, the Great Western Society cannot guarantee that this will be the case. However, in the event of unavailability, an alternative locomotive will be offered if possible. If no alternative loco can be offered, a full refund will be made.
