Submitting Material for the Great Western Echo

The GW Echo is a full colour quality magazine. In order to maximise the effectiveness of their submissions contributors should follow the procedure set out below.

Submission Dates

Articles, letters and photographs for the Echo should be forwarded to Adrian Knowles, Echo editor, as per the attached and revised notes.

How to submit material for the Great Western Echo (updated January 2020)

Please read these notes carefully, all previous instructions are cancelled. The GW Echo is a full colour quality magazine. In order to maximise the effectiveness of their submissions contributors should follow the procedure set out below. DRC Departmental Reporters in particular are asked to be aware of the following notes:

General

1. The preferred means of submission is by email to editor@didcotrailwaycentre.org.uk. Photographs and images can also be emailed, please note that for good reproduction a minimum native file size of 5MB or more is required. Files up to 20MB can be accepted and larger files can also be sent by one of the many free file transfer services. Please note that the minimum scan resolution should be 300dpi and the minimum physical size 150mm x 100mm (an uncompressed file size of 6MB minimum). please submit files in JPEG (.jpg) format saved at the highest possible resolution, although TIFF, PDF and PSD files are also acceptable.Please do not send illustrations or any other material in Microsoft Publisher as it cannot be read on the Macintosh systems used to produce the Echo. Text should be sent either as a Microsoft Word document or simply pasted into the body of an email. Please ensure you only use capital letters where absolutely necessary, and no double spaces after full stops PLEASE!
2. All material should be submitted directly to the editor and not through a third party. If not using email, please either -
   • Leave material with Thomas Macey in the Didcot office who will arrange for it to be forwarded.
   • Send by post to: Adrian Knowles, 5 Whites Way, Sutton Benger, Wiltshire SN15 4TX. Please note that material sent to or left at Didcot may be subject to delay as the editor is only able to collect post infrequently. Hard copy material will only be returned if a stamped addressed envelope is enclosed with the contribution.
3. The cut-off date for submission of material is the last possible time for receipt of material for the next magazine; however, contributors should aim to submit date-relevant material as early as possible after an event.

Contributions of articles about matters outside the Society or DRC routine events (e.g. Historical articles)

1. The Echo’s area of interest covers any aspect of the GWR or BR(W) or any directly related subject, such as GWR influence on other railways in the UK and across the world. Any aspect of Didcot, the past, current events or future plans and articles about local railway personalities or those currently involved at Didcot are always welcome. Please aim for a maximum of 2,000 words and no multi-part articles please. Brevity is better than complexity! Please note that contributions of copyright material must be cleared beforehand with the copyright holder. Regrettably we are unable to fund reproduction fees.
2. Contributors of historical articles should source reference important statements, particularly where such statements might be controversial or open to interpretation. Source referencing is a useful exercise for authors to back up important statements with a reference which shows the authority for making it. You do not have to use the academic system with its funny Latin tags, the simple insertion of a number in brackets after a statement and listing at the end of the article against those numbers, the authority for that statement will suffice.;
