School visits

  • Experience the feel of travelling on a steam train.
  • Enjoy the luxury of the 1930s Great Western Railway. Contrast it with the hardship of travel in our third class Victorian carriage.
  • Learn about the engineers who designed, built and worked on the railways and discover the impact the railways had on the environment and on social history.
  • Find out about science, engineering or history in practical ways.
  • Study science and engineering by learning about steam locomotives. Machines that changed the world!
  • Climb onto the footplate of a Great Western locomotive and learn about the skills of a driver, fireman and guard.
  • Sit in the open carriage behind the locomotive Fire Fly (which will remain stationary). The locomotive was one of the engineering wonders of the 1840s. It was THE fastest vehicle on the planet!

Additional Information

Our school days usually begin at 10am and finish at 2pm. The timing allows for travelling to and from your school.

Your school would be divided into groups of 20 children maximum. Please also consider the pupil:adult ratio (See: School Pack)

Each group will have their own Guide and we have presenters at various locations to add to the learning experience.

Our School Pack is filled with useful information including a risk assessment.

All our volunteers are accredited under the STEM Ambassadors scheme to work with school children.
