All of our programmes can be run with or without a train and the learning elements remain the same but it is obviously better and more fun to have a train ride however these get booked quickly so the more notice you give us the better chance that we can match your exact requirements. We may also be able to operate a diesel locomotive. Train days are normally on Thursdays.
Without a train, the learning elements are identical but it gives us the freedom to select almost any day you require. We just need to get the Team together. The Education Team always strive to make every school visit an enjoyable, memorable and educational day out of the classroom. If you have not experienced one of our days have a look at our programmes below and complete the School Booking Form. Our programmes can be changed in any way you require to fit in with your exact topic and we can create something new if you wish but if you need this option please mention it in the ‘Any further Information’ box of the form.
Why not add your own realism and get your children to dress up as evacuees and bring their gas masks?
Your children will learn about the evacuation to the country of school children during WWII in a thought provoking way usually on a steam train. They will be split into small groups and learn what life was like after evacuation.
You will survive an air raid in our genuine, authentically restored, air-raid shelter with wartime audio effects and artefacts.
Presentations about life in wartime Britain; covering various subjects such as food, clothes and rationing.
This took place in the 1830s & 1840s. Queen Victoria came to the throne during 1837 and so the visit could have a Victorian theme if you wish. Our artefacts session allows the children to handle some objects and learn about them and the presentation leads the children from the horse and cart, through canals to the railways, and covers the economic, social and commercial benefits that came with the new railway era, but if you need anything please do not hesitate to let us know.
This programme incorporates our Travel and Transport and Victorians programmes and it can be adapted in any way to suit your requirements. Please let us know.
We hope to enlist the help of Mr Isambard Kingdom Brunel but please do not let the children know!
This programme is especially for the little ones: Nurseries, Pre-school age etc. It can also be coupled with another presentation named Railway Workers which is quite hands-on.
This programme takes the children through the Inventions of the Industrial Revolution and we again try to enlist the help of Mr Isambard Kingdom Brunel who would also conduct a workshop that measures tractive effort in a very gentle way which demonstrates why trains were, and still are, so important.
If you have further questions or you would like to book a day with us, please contact the Great Western Society's Education Team, using our School Booking Form.
