Train Operations

We run trains on Steam Days on around 100 days every year and in addition, there are shunting, stock movements and other running necessary to prepare for open days and special events. Volunteers are needed in each section of the Operating Department; let us know that you'd like to help and we'll get in touch - full training will be given. (Contact - Richard Jermyn):

  • Shunters are involved with all train movements on site: they move the trains around and co-ordinate the operations on running days and move stock into the correct place if required on other days. Shunter is also the entry grade for footplate crews (fireman and driver) and is an excellent way to gain the vital experience and rules knowledge needed to progress to those roles.
  • Guards have overall responsibility for a train, specifically looking after the coaches and passengers.
  • Station Masters are in charge of platforms, ensuring safety and enjoyment of public. An important role assisting visitors to board trains, helping with train departures and engaging with passengers. This is an ideal role for combining customer-facing skills with an active operational role.
  • Signalmen - Signalmen operate the signalling system from our two signal boxes on the Branch Line. ‘Box talkers’ also give brief talks to visitors to Radstock North Signal Box on operating days.
  • Firemen - this skilled job is responsible for stoking the fire and controlling the water to make sure the boiler produces just the right amount of steam. New volunteers wishing to become a fireman will need to train as a shunter first in order to gain a solid understanding of operating rules procedures.
  • Steam Drivers - works the locomotive to regulate the speed and direction of the train.  Drivers will have spent a considerable time gaining footplate experience as a fireman and trainee driver before taking their test and being passed competent to take the controls unsupervised.
  • Diesel Drivers and Secondmen - on some open days, the second demonstration train is run by one of our diesel locomotives.  These are also often used for shunting on days that the Centre is closed to the public.
  • Duty Managers - A managerial role in charge of operating activities on running days.
  • Travelling Post Office - Maintain and operate the TPO coach and apparatus.
  • Crane Drivers - a specialist role working the self-propelled cranes to assist with engineering work around the site.

As operating roles are safety critical, volunteers are required to undergo a confidential medical, and as each role requires initial training and supervision volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 8 turns per year.
