Living Museum of the Great Western Railway

Visitor Experience Team

Join the friendly and welcoming team that looks after our visitors.  There is a wide range of opportunities and as we're open on around 250 days each year, you can do as much, or as little as you would like - many of the roles, require no previous experience and can be undertaken on a flexible or part-day basis.

  • Ticket Offices - Selling tickets at the entrance and providing an excellent first impression and warm welcome for visitors.
  • Gift Shop - Shop Assistants to answer customers' questions, operate the till, replenish displays and keep the shop tidy and welcoming.
  • Tour Guides  - To help with short talks on open days, tours for pre-booked groups or for visitors on Railway Experience Days or VIP Behind The Scenes Visits.
  • Museum Stewards - Welcoming visitors to the Museum with its fascinating collection of GWR artefacts and memorabilia.
  • Period Re-enactors - Costumed characters bring the Centre to life, provide short talks, answer visitors' questions - and pose for photographs!
  • Catering - The Refreshment Rooms is an important port of call for many visitors; we need help with all aspects from cooking lunches, making sandwiches, serving at the counter, clearing tables and, of course, washing up! (Contact Ellen Hare)
  • Events - Assistants for special events such as Days Out With Thomas, Steam Into Christmas and Victorian Days (costumed); entertainers, platform staff, Santa helpers.

We need volunteers to carry out all types of tasks - let us know if you'd like to help.
