Living Museum of the Great Western Railway

The 231 Club

The 231 Club exists to collect donations from Great Western Society members specifically to fund Carriage and Wagon projects not normally covered by the annual budget. Auto trailer No. 231, the Club’s mascot, is the first coach purchased by the Great Western Society in the 1960s.

The Club allocates numbers, usually chosen by the purchasing member, for a donation of £60 per number per year. Members are welcome to purchase more than one number! Prize winning numbers are drawn by a computer random number system at intervals during the year.

18 prizes of £100 are awarded each year, with two Christmas prizes of £500 each. These are paid via cheque, so members should ensure current addresses with telephone and email contacts are provided.

New membership, or renewal

The preferred way is for members to provide a standing order with their bank for £5 per month, though quarterly or half-yearly (February and August) standing orders are also acceptable. Alternatively full payment for the year can be made by one cheque or direct bank transfer, but please make the payment prior to May to simplify reconciliation for eligibility in the draws.

Thank you for supporting this important fund. So much progress is being made by staff and volunteers, but as always cost is often the limiting factor. With your help the Department can continue to flourish and complete rewarding and exciting projects.
