Lancs and Yorks Tank arrives for May Events

The Lancashire and Yorkshire 0-6-0 Saddle Tank engine has arrived at Didcot and will be in action at our two major events in May.

752 was built in 1881, as a tender locomotive, at the Manchester works of Beyer Peacock for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, who rebuilt he in April 1896 to the current saddle tank design. 752 became LMS 11456 at the 1923 Grouping and continued in service on the old L&Y system in the Wigan area until withdrawal in 1937. She was then sold to the Blainscough Colliery Company for their Welch Whittle Colliery near Wigan. In 1947 the colliery and, consequently the locomotive, became the property of the National Coal Board. 752 continued in service at Chisnall Hall and Standish collieries in the Wigan area until taken into the NCB’s Kirklees works at Wigan. By April 1960 752 was back at work at Parsonage Colliery near Leigh where, apart from a brief spell at Bickershaw Colliery, she stayed until falling out of use by 1966.

She was acquired by what has now become the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust in 1968. The locomotive was originally based on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, but now has a home on the East Lancashire Railway.

The locomotive is currently in a British Railways livery, which of course she never carried in pre-preservation service, and carries the number 51456.
