Didcot to Oxford Great Western Railway 175th Anniversary Celebrations

Saturday June 15th

Didcot Railway Centre is just one of the places to enjoy on this day as we celebrate the opening of the Didcot to Oxford branch line of the Great Western Railway in June 1844.

There will be events at or near all five stations along the line – Didcot, Appleford, Culham, Radley and Oxford:

  • Didcot - As well as the activities at the Railway Centre, a GWR train wil be named in honour of the 175th anniversary at about 11am in the station
  • Appleford - A family fete at the recreation field, with steam traction engines, vintage cars, a brass band and family activities
  • Culham - The ticket office in the original Brunel broad-gauge era staion building will be open with a display of historic railway items
  • Radley - Displays, storytellers and a grandstand view of passing trains in the garden of the Bowyer Arms
  • Oxford - Events at the Grandpont Recreation Ground including model and minature railways, live music, stalls and displays

Pendon Museum at Long Wittenham will be open and will be served by the special 175 bus service. Note that admission to Pendon Museum is not included in the combined ticket.

Vintage Trains will be bringing their flagship locomotive, GWR number 7029 'Clun Castle' to Oxford specially to join in with the anniversary celebrations.

Don't miss what is going to be a great day for all ages and all interests. Visit one, a couple, or even all the venues. Using the combined ticket why not take advantage of the special 175 bus service operated by Thames Travel which will run a circular route hourly from Didcot? Or travel by any normal scheduled GWR train. Whatever you choose to do you will not be disappointed.

This is a Steam Day, so you will be able to view our collections of locomotives, coaches, wagons and buildings as described in the Centre Guide and in our Guidebook (available for purchase from our shop or at the entrance) and enjoy the various facilities and exhibits.

Discover Brunel's Broad Gauge and the 1930s Engine Shed. Visit the GWT Museum and our restoration workshops. Watch the modern pasenger and freight trains from our Picnic Area.

You can walk around the only surviving steam age loco depot in its original condition, and get up close to our large collection of locomotives which are so much more impressive when seen from ground level. Why not explore the rest of the centre including the Archie Trail, the Science Learning & Railways interactive exhibition and visit our shop and refreshment room?

In addition, you will be able to:

  • Ride in coaches from the 1930s behind some of our Great Western steam locomotives, or in our Steam Railmotor or Diesel Railcar. We have two running lines, 'The Main Line' and 'The Branch Line' with trains normally running on either or both of them. You may ride as many times as you like as there is no extra charge
  • Watch the trains go past. There are frequent journeys on our running lines so you will have plenty of opportunity to take photos from vantage points alongside the tracks as well as ride on the trains

Check our Locomotive Roster to see what we expect to be running on your next visit.
