No 42271 - 'Loriot L' Well Wagon

‘Loriot’ was the GWR telegraphic code for what were originally described as ‘Agricultural Implement Wagons’ or ‘Machine Trucks’, and were generally 4-wheel well wagons with sloping ramps at either end (The ‘Hydra’ - see 42193 - was a similar vehicle but fitted with vacuum brakes and intended for use in passenger trains). The ‘L’ designates a 15ft, 15 ton capacity machine well truck. The ‘Loriots’ and ‘Hydras’ were redesignated as ‘Lowmacs’ by British Rail.

42271 was one of seven similar wagons built to diagram G13 between 1926 and 1934. Built in 1934, it was originally preserved by the National Railway Museum. It is generally in use at Didcot as a boiler trolley.
