No 537 - 3 Ton Hand Crane

Great Western Railway, rail-mounted, hand-operated, 3 ton crane. Ex St Blazey, Cornwall.

Small cranes like this were used to load and unload wagons.  This one is rail mounted so that it can be shunted to where it is needed.  The maximum safe working load is 3 tons.  When new it was allocated to Birmingham but by 1936 was allocated to the Engineering Department at St Blazey.  As preserved it carries plates for the Traffic Department (revenue earning goods) rather than the Engineering Department.

This vehicle was transferred to Didcot from the National Railway Museum in 2011.
