Help preserve our unique Grade II listed 1932 Engine Shed for future generations

In just eight years time, the Great Western Railway’s steam shed at Didcot will mark its centenary. Standing the test of time with only occasional repairs, the shed has become a symbol of our rich railway heritage. However, the moment has now arrived where substantial repairs, renovation, and restoration are needed.

Didcot Railway Centre is home to one of the most extensive and significant collections of heritage steam engines and rolling stock in the United Kingdom and holds a special place in the hearts of railway enthusiasts, historians, and the general public, serving as a crucial guardian of Great Western Railway heritage.

The Society faces a critical challenge that endangers our ability to safeguard this invaluable collection for future generations. Our cherished listed building, housing these historic locomotives, urgently requires roof repairs. The passage of time and exposure to the elements have taken their toll, and without immediate intervention, we risk irreparable damage to this national treasure. Without a structurally sound building to house these beautiful steam engines, our mission is in jeopardy.

Over the years our membership and supporters have made a major contribution towards making Didcot Railway Centre the success it is today and we hope that we can look to such support and financial assistance again for the much-needed roof repair project. The estimated cost of this restoration is £3 million, covering architectural assessments, repairs, and conservation work for which we are also looking to approach a number of grant making trusts. Any support which you can give would not only ensure the preservation of our unique collection but also enable us to continue our extensive educational programmes and local public outreach.

The significance of this project extends beyond the walls of our museum by safeguarding a substantial part of our national heritage as a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of a bygone era.

With your support, we can ensure that future generations continue to benefit from the insights and inspiration offered by our unparalleled collection of heritage steam trains and make an immeasurable difference in our efforts to preserve and promote our railway heritage.

Thank you
