Step into the fascinating world of steam locomotives and railway engineering with this exciting hands-on experience — perfect for curious young minds aged 5 and up!
What’s Included:
Kick Off in Style: Begin your adventure inside the beautifully restored 1930s Engine Shed. Meet Chris Vine, author of Peter’s Railway, as he brings the magic of steam engines to life with a interactive talk.
Hands-On Workshop: Join Chris for a fun and fascinating workshop where children get to explore how real steam locomotives work — see the science and engineering behind these mighty machines in action! (Approx. 1 hour)
Behind-the-Scenes Tours: Children (in small groups of 10) will head off to exclusive areas usually closed to the public:
Workshop & Turntable: Discover how these mechanical giants are maintained and turned.
Coal Stage & Signalling Centre: Learn how steam engines are fuelled and how trains are safely controlled on busy railways.
Steam Train Ride: Climb aboard for a ride behind a real, working steam locomotive — feel the heat, hear the whistle, and watch the steam rise!

Explore the full railway museum.
Let off steam in the children’s play park.
Visit the on-site shop and enjoy family-friendly catering.
