Living Museum of the Great Western Railway

Richard Preston

Richard became a member of the Great Western Society in 1968, begining with the restoration of locomotive 6998 and has been actively involved in railway preservation ever since.

Over the years, Richard twice served as the GWS Locomotive Manager and was also a member of the Management Council, the predecessor of the current Board. For several years, he held the role of Engineer in charge of mainline-certified locomotive 5029, Nunney Castle, which operated charter services on the national rail network.

Richard is deeply committed to the long-term sustainability of Didcot Railway Centre and to the preservation of the historical artefacts entrusted to its care. Since January 2018, I have had the honour of serving as Chairman of the Great Western Society.

Professionally, the majority of his career was spent as a consultant, supporting a range of organisations, including railway companies, in meeting their legal and regulatory obligations, as well as helping them achieve certification to various British and International standards.
