The Board of the Great Western Society consists of a Chair, Deputy Chair and not less than four and not more than eight other volunteer members of the Society.
The primary purpose of the Board is to ensure that the Society meets its objectives, as defined in the Society’s Articles of Association. Therefore, a mix of skills are required. The Board is fortunate in attracting volunteers who have day-to-day experience of the Great Western Society and Didcot Railway Centre, as well as volunteers who bring specific skills of value to the Board and provide a more non-executive role.
Members of the Board are both Directors of the Great Western Society and Trustees. All are required to confirm they accept the Rules Governing Code of Conduct.
Members are usually co-opted by the Board to fill a gap in the skills of the Board. They are then elected by the membership at the subsequent Annual General Meeting. However, members of the Great Western Society may be nominated for election to the Board. If the nomination is received by 15th June, and if it is accepted, it will be added to the agenda for election at the Annual General Meeting that year. Applications are considered by a Nominations Committee, who make a recommendation to the Board. A template for nominations is available. Anyone considering nominating themselves is recommended to read the document linked from this page.
